If you use Shopify Tax, set the product category and it’ll apply product rate exemptions automatically.
You can test via creating a product, adding a category, and then using a draft order with an address of your choosing (I normally google for a McDonald’s since they’re everywhere)

In terms of Filing, Shopify Tax can do that too. However, we do not help with registrations.
If that’s something you’re looking for (end to end), I’d recommend Numeral or Zamp.

Our goal is never to displace the ecosystem. Numeral, Zamp and many others are great choices for merchants.
We’re on a mission to make a great, integrated end to end sales tax product that works for a merchant on Day 1 of their journey or Day 10,000.

Shopify Tax is now available for merchants collecting VAT in the UK and EU. It features automated calculations (including automatic reduction and zero rating by product category), VAT invoicing, and threshold tracking—giving you more time to spend on growing your sales in the EU and UK.

Hey @Ly - you’d set up sales tax in your Shopify Admin under “Taxes and Duties”. Those orders are taxed based upon your individual liability and however you configure it

Yeah. The perception is a bit odd. However, eCommerce sales tax has the added wrinkle of the origin of the good (where it’s fulfilled from) being an input into the rate.
For this reason, most: Amazon, Uber, Walmart pursue the same approach of estimating at checkout.

Totally fair feedback. I can assure you we are constantly watching the deltas to ensure we balance checkout latency and accuracy. Don’t want anyone to lose sales or pay taxes out of pocket.

Hey Jamie! Thanks for the question.
Shopify Tax best compares against TaxJar’s “professional” plan which is $99/mo for 200 orders. That’s about $0.50/order. At 35bps for Shopify Tax, most merchants pay around $0.35/order… obvs more depending upon average order value.
TaxJar and Shopify Tax both calculate sales tax at the same precision (rooftop accuracy with product exemptions); however, TaxJar is unable to calculate it during checkout. Any delta between what Shopify captures and what they recommend would require manual work on a merchant’s part (to either take additional out of your profit or to manually refund if you believe it’s too much).
What TaxJar supports that Shopify Tax doesn’t (yet) is filing. So, if you’re not able to take advantage of filings, it probably isn’t worth the monthly fee.

Hey @Kevin Elbaum - Audry Rose Mike from Shopify here. This is the default experience for Shopify Tax.
Sales tax is estimated during checkout to ensure we keep the fastest checkout possible. It’s finalized as the order is created and then payment is updated. Eventually, this finalization will move to moment of fulfillment (as fulfillment location changes can impact tax rates).
