Hey all - Mike from the Shopify Tax team here. Would love some feedback. What painkillers can we prioritize on our roadmap to help out with sales tax?
Hi Mike. I didn’t even realize Shopify Tax was activated for us, I guess automatically. I’m still paying for taxjar too, but can’t take advantage of their auto filing services because we’re Canadian. So do I even need that service or does Shopify Tax provide the same info? albeit at a higher cost by the looks of it.

Shopify Tax best compares against TaxJar’s “professional” plan which is $99/mo for 200 orders. That’s about $0.50/order. At 35bps for Shopify Tax, most merchants pay around $0.35/order… obvs more depending upon average order value.
TaxJar and Shopify Tax both calculate sales tax at the same precision (rooftop accuracy with product exemptions); however, TaxJar is unable to calculate it during checkout. Any delta between what Shopify captures and what they recommend would require manual work on a merchant’s part (to either take additional out of your profit or to manually refund if you believe it’s too much).
What TaxJar supports that Shopify Tax doesn’t (yet) is filing. So, if you’re not able to take advantage of filings, it probably isn’t worth the monthly fee.
