I’ve talked, interviewed and worked with over 700+ editors and/or creative strategists over the last 18mo and this person is true 1-of-1 unicorn. He can strategize, edit videos, brief creators, record new content from scratch, film content himself, analyze ads, build/train creative teams, and use AI to build workflows/processes that actually get adopted by others.
He’s personally worked directly with some of the fastest growing D2C brands: Brez, Cuts Clothing, FitAid, SolaceBands, Condition1, NinjaTransfers +125 others. TLDR; he’s a freaking beast and all of these brands personally request him to work on the projects that they come to us with.
He was the first “official” person who joined my company when it started, and has been with me ever since. He’s incredibly loyal, patient, compassionate, dedicated, and intentional with his craft. The one downside is sometimes he’s too creative and think’s outside the box :)
So why is this person even available?!?
Transparently my business is in a phase of reconstruction and I can’t guarantee I’ll have steady full-time work for him beginning in September. I gave him a heads up and want to help me find someone who can offer the position I’m not able to, to maximize his potential. Believe me, this is not someone I want to lose.

Built a community for our brand up to 8k active subs. We funneled people from our post-purchase sequence into the community.

Was able to collect 1.8k videos directly from customers in 16 months by giving store credit (not gift cards or cash); this was the system:
- Create about your program: a. Include: examples of types of videos you want to receive, how the process works, and any FAQ.
- Create lead flow. Make sure to start sharing this opportunity with people before they receive the product. If they get emails after they’ve already received your product it’s too late. a. Create a post-purchase email. Trigger on day customers order is confirmed. In the message tell them they can earn store credit by sharing an honest testimonial to their purchase . Throw in the link to the info page so they can navigate ahead of time. b. Update the default confirmation emails in Shopify (order confirmed, shipment out of delivery, etc…) with a message that says: “See how you can earn $$$ by sharing your feedback about your purchase.”
- Create the form to capture uploads. Here’s the fields & questions you need: a. Photo/video upload (file upload) b. What was the reason for purchasing the product? (long text) c. Describe the impact of the product? (long text) d. Would you recommend our product*?* And why*?* (long text) e. Name f. Email g. Scrollable Terms & Conditions {IMPORTANT}. This allows you to have the rights to distribute content through organic, email, paid social.
- Incentives:
***MOST IMPORTANT***a. Give store credit (not cash, amazon gift cards, or free product). What’s more valuable: $100 in store credit, $20 amazon gift card? Depending on your margins your costs for both are likely the same. b. If customers loved your product they’ll come back and purchase again using their credit, and will likely submit another video for you. c. Tell people they can earn up to ‘$X’. I gave customers up to $250 in store credit. The amount depends on if the customers video fit all the criteria d. Here’s the criteria I used to determine payout: i. Is video resolution clear? ii. Was product removed from packaging? iii. Was there a reaction? iv. Did the user submit a story with more than 3 words as a response? v. Does the video show an unboxing? vi. Is the video longer than 30sec? vii. Was a child (>16 years old) in the video? Hopefully this is valuable! After tuning this, I was able to generate content without creating designs in photoshop/canva, buying videos from actors, and planning photoshoots. And the videos converted better on paid ads because they were authentic.

I wouldn’t worry about competitors. Focus on your customers. Clearly your competitors aren’t. Focusing on competitors will hold you back from growing the business.
They can copy you all they want, but they don’t know why you’re doing what you’re doing. And by the time they copy, they get to where you were, not where you are.

BUT, the most effective method has been finding people who have done the thing im trying to do, asking them for their hourly rate and getting on 1-2hr call w/them. If you do your research on the right person, they’ll tell you everything they know and more in that short session.
Spend money to save time, not to consume content. The quicker you can realize gains from knowledge, the quicker you can reinvest into more knowledge.

@Wyatt Kern why not use your existing customers, and incentivize them to send you UGC instead of finding creators?
Videos will be more authentic b/c customers have already invested in the product, and purchased for a reason vs. getting a creator and having the product be seeded for free.
