Hi all -

I’m looking for guidance or support from anyone experienced with Shopify in troubleshooting an issue with collecting duties for Canada orders. Despite our setup appearing correct (HS codes are in place, and the backend has been reviewed), duties are not being applied at checkout for Canadian customers.

Key points:
• We’ve verified Shopify’s de minimis thresholds for Canada (duties should apply for orders over $20 CAD or $150 CAD when shipped from the US).
• Shopify has confirmed the backend settings look fine but suggested we double-check HS codes and shipping configurations.
• The issue may also involve tax registrations—we currently only have GST set up for BC, MN, and SK but not HST or PST for other provinces.
Does anyone have experience solving this or know of any tools/apps that might help streamline duties collection for international orders? I’d appreciate any advice or contacts within Shopify who can assist further. I would love to help my team with expertise!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Check out StoreTasker, they can surely help out finding someone in case you don’t find anything else here in the community

this sounds complex. Another option is to consider 3PL's that offer global shipments through providers like Passport Priority. They handle DDU, DDP and all the paperwork.

@Christy Brown did you end up solving this? 👀

Sort of’ish… we are working with Shopify support on their recommendation.

Alright - how is that going?

@Christy Brown you would need to be on shopify managed markets in order to collect duty from the customer at time of purchase. MM charges taxes to the customer based on region (remits to CA government) and also charges, collects, and remits duty. They handle this for a 6% fee. I have this set up now, although I am considering taking it off. happy to chat via DM or facetime if you need more explanation. Went through all this last year.
